OTJUMUE - SUD

The reserve is home to Leopard, Cheetah, Caracal and Brown Hyena, all of which are more likely to be seen in the dry season; while in years of  drought, Lion, Elephant, Wild Dog and Spotted Hyena may pass through. . We are part of the national Cheetah Conservation Program, that is trying to halt the horrific decline in population. In 1980 there were nearly 13,000 Cheetahs in Namibia, but that has shrunk to somewhere close to 3,000 today.

Hartmann's Mountain Zebra

Apart from the larger antelope, like Kudu, Oryx and Springbok, there are many other equally exciting animals to find. You will come across Warthog, Baboon, Bat-eared Fox, Steenbok and the tiny Damara Dik-Dik to name but a few. We have embarked on a breeding program for species under threat in this area, and you can also see Giraffe, Eland, Impala, Hartmann’s  Mountain Zebra, Blue Wildebeest and Red Hartebeest. On foot you may have as much fun discovering Terrapins, Tortoises, Chameleons and the occasional Monitor lizard, which those in vehicles will almost always miss.

Our resident professionally qualified Manager, Louis, is there to guide you, show you round and look after you.  He can also take you on a night game drive, which reveals nocturnal life in the bush and some of those species rarely seen by day, such as Wild Cat, Genet, Porcupine and Aardvark.

Birds

The bird life in Africa is amazing and in this particular corner of Namibia it is especially so. There are over 185 species seen regularly on the reserve and you will see anything from Ostrich and Eagles to tiny Rosy-faced Lovebirds. We are fortunate to have both Black Eagles and the very rare Ruppel’s Parrot living and nesting here. The heaviest flying bird in Africa, the Kori Bustard is another frequent sighting. Much fun can be had from walking along the edge of a riverbed with one person on either side. The birds that are disturbed by the one will fly across to the other side and vice versa, giving both parties a better chance to identify or photograph them.
