OTJUMUE - SUD Essential Equipment. You do not need much, but the following are absolutely essential: sunhat, sunglasses, sunblock, binoculars (10x 40 are ideal), torch with spare batteries, insect repellent, khaki shorts and shirts for daytime in the bush, long trousers and a fleece/jersey for the cool of the early morning/evening, ankle-high walking boots, lipsalve, camera (ideally with min. 200 zoom) plus 400speed film. Danger! If you are going to live in the bush then there is an element of danger. It is part of the excitement in leaving one’s fireside. At the risk of stating the blindingly obvious, if you are tracking Leopard or Cheetah, then you go carefully. In the bush one should always remember that you are part of the animal world, which is not something to which we are accustomed. Go slowly and always be aware of your surroundings. Snake sightings are not frequent, but special care should always be taken when out walking or climbing. Remember that the wildlife is looking for every chance to avoid coming into contact with humans, and will back off unless put in a position where it feels threatened. We use short wave radios and mobiles to keep in touch with base when we are out in the bush. The bottom line is that none of us would take silly risks with our families, and we have spent several weeks each year on Otjumue with our children for the last twelve years. Health Please contact your doctor for specific up to date advice on any requirements for travelling to Namibia. Anti-malarial precautions should always be commenced prior to departure. Insurance Please take out comprehensive travel insurance at the time of your booking to cover items such as holiday cancellation, loss of luggage/money, emergency evacuation, medical expenses, etc. |
