OTJUMUE - SUD, OMARURU, NAMIBIA

If you are looking for a motorized trawl through the African Bush then read no further. If you are looking for a wilderness, where you are remote and truly in the wild, where you can live with and feel part of the Animal Kingdom, then this may be for you.

Sundowners - Otjumue koppies

What It Is.

Otjumue-Sud is 48,000 acres (192sq. km.) of Namibian bushveld - a private game reserve that is available for rental for only 10 weeks a year. It is beautiful and unspoilt, yet only 3 hours drive (or an hour by charter plane) north of Windhoek, the capital of Namibia.

There are four main rivers crossing the reserve, but being Namibia, they only run for a few days a year, if we are lucky. The rest of the year they are ‘rivers of sand’- shaded highways for the game and bird life. Rocky granite hills (Koppies), previously home to the Bushmen, form wonderful natural vantage points for watching game. There are three small sites where Bushman cave paintings can be found and their art is an inspiring link with the past. There are also two main earth dams, which will have more or less water in them depending on the season.

When to go?

The weather is wonderfully reliable, and sun and warmth are as near guaranteed as they can ever be. The rainy season is from December to March, thus Otjumue is at its greenest April- May, though naturally the game is more spread out. Fortunately with 275mm (11ins) of rainfall over only three/four months in an average year we remain a low malaria risk area.

During the drier months of winter (June-September), the bush is less dense and the Game is more concentrated around the water holes. At this time of year it can be cold enough in the early mornings and evenings to warrant a fleece and long trousers. During the day khaki shorts and shirt is all you need.

Game

Almost everybody who comes to Africa comes in part for the Game, and the beauty of Otjumue is that you can watch them at your own pace and unencumbered by anyone else. Game here still regards Man with suspicion and sudden movements or noise will frighten animals away. Game in the National Parks will let vehicles very close, but of course, you cannot get out of the car. Staying on a private reserve you can ride or walk, then stalk and photograph animals in their own territory. One must still be careful and respect the fact that here Man is the intruder and this is an animal world.

Hunting

Hunting  and bird shooting are available according to season. This is always done in coordination with strict quotas laid down by our conservation policy. The income from all hunting and shooting is reinvested into our breeding programs for endangered species. Guests will be accompanied at all times by  a registered professional hunter.

Please ask for further details for hunting, riding and sporting fees.
